John Clark received a BA from the University of Rochester (New York), where he studied theory, arranging, piano, and horn with Verne Reynolds. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition and improvisation with Jaki Byard, Ran Blake, and George Russell, and French horn with James Stagliano, Thomas Newell, and Paul Ingraham. Clark is also the recipient of numerous awards and grants, such as ones from the International Horn Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), and was listed in the Down Beat critic's poll for four years in a row.
Clark performs regularly around the New York area with his own group, and also plays with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, and the Aspen Wind Quintet. He is also working on putting together a French horn group with Vincent Chancey, Tom Varner, and Arkady Schilkloper.
